Reading
At St Joseph's, we believe reading to be one of the most crucial skills in life and a critical part of a child’s education. It is essential for children to be able to access the whole curriculum. Reading allows children to improve their language skills by expanding their vocabulary, supporting their use of language structure, and developing their understanding of grammar.
Learning to read develops the brain, heightens creativity, develops imagination, and builds self-confidence. As well as ensuring academic success, learning to read opens a whole new world for children providing a lifetime of pleasure and enjoyment.
St Joseph's Library:
Every child gets the chance to visit the library every week and choose a book to borrow. For younger children on our RWI phonics programme, this will be in addition to the phonetically decodable book they bring home.

Reading for pleasure:
At St Joseph's, we believe that promoting reading for pleasure is one of the most valuable things that we can do for our children's future.
We aim to:
- Ensure that every child is regularly read to.
- Develop social reading environments that spark interest in reading and encourage ‘comfy’ reading.
- Ensure that children have a wide range of high quality books; fiction, nonfiction, poetry and graphic novels to choose from.
- Ensure that as a staff we model an enjoyment of reading.
- Increase the amount of high quality, current children’s literature, available for all children to read.
